With glasses or contact lenses, many people feel restricted in their daily lives: There are professions in which glasses or contact lenses are not permitted, e.g. for safety reasons, for example, whereas they are simply inconvenient in many types of sports such as swimming. Many contact lens wearers suffer from dry eyes due to air conditioning systems; those wearing glasses get headaches because their glasses don’t fit properly. Laser eye surgery using the LASIK method
Comprehensive examinations are carried out after a detailed informed-consent discussion. With the help of a computerised diagnostic system we collect and store all the data on the eye, such as texture, curvature and thickness of the cornea. The computer then calculates the best LASIK treatment plan for the upcoming correction.
The procedure itself takes only a few minutes and is virtually painless for the patient. The laser not only corrects the corneal surface, but also the deeper layers of the cornea. After surgery, patients must regularly use antibacterial eye drops for two weeks. There is an initial follow-up examination immediately after surgery; other follow-up examinations take place over the next few months.
What does LASIK mean?
LASIK (acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) has become the world’s most successfully performed technology for refractive surgery in the treatment of vision defects. More than 5 million people worldwide have already had a LASIK procedure, with 100,000 annually in Germany alone.
By the way: LASIK has been recognised by the German Ophthalmological Society and the German Association of Ophthalmologists (BVA) as a scientific procedure with a very low complication rate.
How does LASIK work?
First, a thin flap (0.12mm) is created in the cornea under computer guidance, to provide access to the cornea. The corneal layer is then treated with the laser. After surgery, the corneal flap is folded back again. It adheres by itself and protects the wound like a natural dressing.
