BIOPTICS-OP at LZW:
When is a BIOPTICS operation useful?

BIOPTICS procedures combine the implantation of an artificial lens with laser eye treatment. The most common procedure is the implantation of artificial lenses in combination with LASIK. This treatment is usually performed with long-sightedness that is significantly higher than +4 dioptres (dpt.) or short-sightedness of more than -8 dpt.

BIOPTICS procedures can also be used in cases of severe astigmatism. Right before the LASIK procedure accurate incisions are made below the flap that was previously detached in preparation for the LASIK procedure. They significantly reduce the effects of astigmatism. The cornea is then modelled and corrected with LASIK.

Advantages of combining the lens operation with LASIK

Combining refractive surgery with LASIK significantly reduces the strain on the eyes. The use of both procedures in one eye significantly expands the options for vision correction surgery. BIOPTICS makes our patients’ dream of enjoying life without glasses or contacts come true.
Please contact Dr Beate Steinhorst for a personal consultation regarding BIOPTICS procedures that may be suitable for your eyes.

Step 1 – refractive surgery

> more

In the first step, an artificial, intraocular or phakic lens is inserted in addition to the natural lens. Posterior-chamber lenses (artisan/verisyse lenses) or anterior-chamber lenses (ICL lenses) are used, depending on the type of vision defect and the required position of the lens in the eye.

All lenses have excellent optical properties, are highly flexible and made of highly biocompatible materials. They are not visible to the human eye. Which lens is right for you will be discussed in a personal consultation.

Major advantages of this method: It is easy to predict the outcome and the operation can be reversed, if necessary. In this case, LASIK will no longer be performed.

The operation is performed as outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia and takes only a few minutes. Only one eye is operated on the day, the operation of the second eye is carried out a few days later. After surgery, the defective vision of the eye has been largely corrected.

Step 2 – LASIK

> more

In the second step, approximately 6 weeks to 3 months after surgery, the LASIK procedure is carried out.

LASIK is used for the fine correction of any possible residual defective vision or for the correction of a pre-existing astigmatism.

During LASIK, the corneal flap, prepared in the previous operation, is opened, the eye is lasered and the flap is folded back. The flap does not require suturing, as it adheres by itself into the right position.

Costs / Lens surgery

The costs for the services we offer in the field of refractive surgery are usually difficult to state in advance. They depend on the individual diagnosis and examination, as well as the medical and surgical treatment. We would of course be happy to provide you with an individual cost estimate.
